More than 500 trolley buses with KIRSCH drive systems are now in operation worldwide. Between the years 1973 and 2001, around 300 of these buses were fitted with a first APU variant. They had an electric power of between 25 and 60 kW, were driven by Deutz engines and had asynchronous generators developed by us.

Since 2002, we use only our own permanent-magnetically excited (PME) generators. The advantage of these is their speed-related operation and their shorter, lighter and water-cooled design. This in turn makes it possible to install high-performance APUs in confined spaces, e.g. positioned transversely in the rear of the vehicle. An advantage which is much appreciated by our customers. This now makes it possible to build APUs with electric powers of between 50 and 100 kW. Fully tested and mounted on base frames ready for installation, they are driven by diesel engines made by Deutz and Iveco.

The development of a speed-related drive system formed the basis for our entry into the market for higher-powered diesel-electric main-drive units (MPU) for duo and hybrid buses.
